We Will Sell No Wine Before Its Time – Kinda Sorta

We say Whoa!

We learned today that at least one food store was already trying to ring up wine sales – before July 1, when wine can be legally sold at food stores.

With wine tempting customers from grocery shelves, we wonder how many consumers are selecting their favorite pinot, placing it in their cart and either trying to purchase or actually purchasing the wine.

Today, a reliable source informed the ABC – and us – that wine was being scanned for sale.  The source stopped the transaction, so we do not know if the POS system would have prevented the sale.

But the ABC knows and must be understandably concerned.

Let us be clear on this point.  It is illegal for a food store to sell wine before July 1, 2016.

In a very related issue, we strongly advise WIGS license holders not to post food store licenses until July 1.  The ABC has been delivering licenses, but they are not considered issued until July 1, when wine sales are legal.

Gene Autrey croons  (and the wine may be singing):

Let me be by myself in the evenin’ breeze
Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees
Send me off forever but I ask you please
Don’t fence me in
In a rare departure from tradition, we link you to the classic Orson Welles commercial about wine.

Millennials in particular should check it out. 30 seconds.
